Hi Qrc2006, welcome to Wikipedia! How nice that you found your way to this project. Are you a native speaker of Inuktitut?
I suggest that you start or expand some articles that would be vital for this Wikipedia, f.i. on the Inuktitut language and people, on Nunavut, on Canada but also articles on the most elementary things (see meta:List of articles every Wikipedia should have for some inspiration :-)).
Anyway, it's importatn that people start writing bigger articles, for we almost totally lack any articles whit actual content. Perhaps you can translate pages from the English Wikipedia? Good luck! ;-) Steinbach 12:27, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

mouse and other redirects

Hi Qrc2006~iuwiki,

I do not believe that it makes sense to have redirects from the English name of an item to the proper Inuktitut one. For that purpose, we have Interwiki links. As this is supposed to be the Inuktitut Wikipedia, everything that has a proper Inuktitut name should be called by that name. Yes that is exactly my fear, also there are many dialects and spelling differances for otherwise mutually intelligeble (audio) words. Even between North, East, and South Baffin which are spoken almost identically, they are spoken rather differant. That is a great point you have brought up. Alltho the initial reason was a combination of two things. One that the majority of the people on here dont speak inuktitut but i didnt want to make it hard for them to navigate the site which they had been able to navigate very easyly before, because we need all the help we can get. for instance it be great if someone could add in [[iu:ᐃᕉᒃ/irak]] and mouse and all the others to the many languages which they link to, because they do not link back. i feel the most important are english and french the other languages of canada, also greenlandic, and also danish since many inuits study at university there and have internet connection, and be good if they can add to any top 10 languages withs top 100,000+plus speakers. of source it would be the great if they could add it too all on the list but thats the priorities i think. also it made it easier for me to navigate since i have a roman letters keyboard but i only use sylcabics when writing, i look up the transliterations on a website to which you can find the link to on the dictionary article. it makes it much easier to navigate that way, and will for many people who dont have keyboard in syllabics which dont exist and since inuktitut is written only in syllabics in nunavut and labrador, and only some use the other way in NWT community i thot this would be good. maybe someday we can have goal of removing them or creating a sticker set to place on keyboard keys and computer software to switch keyboard to work that way.

I'm not sure, whether I have understood your comment correctly. Concerning the interwiki links: If articles on the Inuktitut wiki have Interwiki links to the other wikis, the backlinks will appear automatically after some time. This is typically taken care of by all the bots that are running in the wikisphere. So no need to worry about that.

Concerning the article names, I still feel that these double titles consisting of both the syllabics version and the Latin transcription look ugly. This wiki is for speakers, writers and readers of Canadian Inuktitut, shouldn't they be expected to read syllabics? Or are there regions, where Inuktitut is written in Latin? Further, if you are using "/" as separator, you are actually creating subpages, because "/" is used to mark subpages of a main page, e.g. en:Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2007 February 6. One could say, the "/" is used as the directory separator on unix file systems (e.g. /usr/local/bin) or the "\" on Windows (C:\windows\system32). Therefore it should not appear in article names, where ever avoidable.

YES Canadian Inuktitut is written in both syllabics, in nunavut and labrador and quebec, but in latin/roman script in northwest territories. well for tomato for instancer how bout "ᒥᓗᑦᓱᑳᒐᖅmilutsukaagaq" or "ᒥᓗᑦᓱᑳᒐᖅ milutsukaagaq" instead of "ᒥᓗᑦᓱᑳᒐᖅ/milutsukaagaq"? thats great about the interwiki links! i dont think it looks ugly at all, i think my language is beautiful if its written in syllabics, latin or even if someone wrote it in sankrit, cyrilic, or arabic letters or something new. both syllabics and roman letters are created by europeans anyways, alltho syllabics have more affinity in my community because they are differant from the english and french who use roman lettrs and we feel they are our own. how unfortunbate about the slash, initially i was going to use a "|" for the serparation and it didnt let me, since it let me use the slash and for instance cree appears on the list of wikipedias as "Nehiyaw / [syllabics]" i just assumed it was in line with style. any ideas on alternatives, maybe separation of articles, an apple article in roman, and apple article in syllabics? or a new inuktitut wikipedia in roman, like nyorsk broke off from regular norwegian?

I think it's ok to have both writings in the article name (as you did) and redirects from the pure syllabic writing, the alphabet writing, and also the English word (why not, let this become a convention for articles here). --Thogo (Talk) 02:55, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Qrc! I just have a question about the dual titles that Johannes has been talking with you about: can a name be transcribed easily from one variant to another? E.g. is there a 1:1 relationship between the signs in "ᒥᓗᑦᓱᑳᒐᖅ" and the signs in "milutsukaagaq"? If there is, I know that a developer would be able to make it so that the transcription is done automatically in the database (it is already so for the Chinese Wikipedia, and on the Kazakh Wikipedia, where one can choose between Latin, Cyrillic and Arabic script. That way your efforts on this Wikipedia will also be more "concentrated", as you won't have to worry about transcribing articles as well. Jon Harald Søby 16:35, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

yes they are exact, see the article for inuktitut and click on the image of the alphabet, the only thing its missing is that for instance the milutsukaagaq in milutsukaagaq would be with a dot, doble letters are the long sound in roman letters and non dot letters are single letters in roman. is there a way to have, syllabics/roman/and both simultaniously as an option?

Yes, you can. See for example any page on kk: for an example of how they do it. Among the buttons on top (article, talk, edit, history, etc), there are three extra buttons: "Кирил", "latin" and "توت". The same can be done here. There is one thing, however, that I need you to do: On a page, you can use my user page for it, create a table that has all the signs from the Canadian syllabics in one column, and the corresponding Latin letters in the other column. The developers will need this to know how pages are to be converted. It has to be using text, the picture won't work for that. Will you be able to do that? The church belongs to the Protestant branch of Christianity that emerged during the early twentieth century. The church aims to preach the gospel to all nations before the Second Coming of Jesus.

you don't have to hand-edit the article count on the main page, just use {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}}, this automatically expands to the current article count: 403

Blocking IP addresses

Hi there, infinitely blocking IP addresses makes little sense, unless you are sure that it is a fixed IP address. Most addresses are dynamic, meaning that they will belong to someone else tomorrow. Hi, blocking a dynamic IP for a year is just as pointless, because they are typically assigned for no more than 24 hours. To quote from the en blocking policy: Dynamic IPs: up to 24 hours. AOL IPs and range blocks: about 15 minutes, then 1-3 hours, and 24 at most, to avoid collateral damage.

I think Johannes Rohr is quite right about that. The good thing about wikis is that everything is kept and no big damage can be done by vandalizing pages. By clicking "rollback" or "revert" everything gets restored easily and cleanly :) 24 hours is enough (actually I have learnt a couple of things from Johannes' text above and from now on I'll be more soft with some of the blocks I apply). Hi Qrc2006~iuwiki, to change the duration, you have to unblock the ip first. Go to Special:Ipblocklist to see the list of currently blocked IPs. I would even recommend to unblock all infinitely blocked IPs (as opposed to registered vandal accounts, which, of course, can and should remain blocked). I see that User:Thogo has already blocked infintely lots of IPs. Before unblocking them, I would wait for him to return and ask him, whether he has checked if these were dynamic or static addresses. There are several pages, like e.g. dnsstuff.com, which allow you to easily check whom an IP belongs to. E.g. for User:89.234.160.10, http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=89.234.160.10 reveals the available info about registrar, company etc. --Johannes Rohr 09:38, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

The IPs I blocked infinitely are Open Proxies, and are blocked infinitely on other projects (as for instance de.wp), too. So please don't unblock them. Now I am sort of busy but I am planning to sooner or later help start the iu wiktionary creating a basic structure of templates and links and creating a few entries by using the names of the articles (and maybe part of the text) here as a base. I am doing something similar in Wiktionary in Mongolian right now. A dictionary could be a help for iu.wikipedia and with certain things ready for easy use it could attract more Inuktitut speakers. Anyway this is still just an idea. I am an administrator in Wiktionary in Spanish and in Wiktionary in Nahuatl. Auto-conversion

Hi, any suggestions concerning Talk:ᐊᒥᖅ/amiq#Dual language? I think it would be hilarious to have auto-conversion between syllabics and roman alphabet in place. Look at the Serbian Wikipedia. Kazakh even supports three writing systems (Arabic, Cyrillic and Latin, just click one of the tabs on the right to get the whole thing displayed in your preferred writing system!), and there are more examples, look at m:Wikipedias in Multi-writing System. Thank you. ;o) Just for explanation, a bot is a user account which is not run manually but per script, thus a little program that edits automatically. They are used to insert interwiki links mainly, but can also do other tasks. The bot status as is requested on Wikipedia:Bots is (on most projects) necessary to be allowed to run a bot. I want to start requesting bot status for all the interwiki bots running through iu.wikipedia, so that they disappear from the Recent Changes page. The interwiki script is mostly free of errors. All interwiki bots use the same script. More important is that the user who runs the bot is trustworthy enough, and that is certainly the case with the ones I requested on Wikipedia:Bots. If a wiki is very active (as en.wiki or de.wiki for example), the bots are crowding the recent changes page, because there are so many of them. And if the wiki is less active, most of the edits are interwiki bot edits, and the bad edits (mostly by anonymous users) are hidden between them, so it is easier to find vandalism if the bot edits can be excluded. Auto-conversion (again)

Hi, I've been looking into auto-conversion between syllabics and roman, since you're the native speaker here, I was wondering if you could answer some questions I have. :)

I came across two unexpected characters, ᐦ (ᐋᓐ ᒦᖀᑦᔩᒃ ᐦᐋᓐᓱᓐ/an miiqitjuk hansun) and ᐂ (ᐂᒌᒧᒦᓇ ᐱᖅ/igimunun piiq). Is ᐦ normally used for the letter "h" in Inuktitut? While I was looking for more information online, I also found "ᕼ", do you ever use that one? Do you normally use ᐂ (and the corresponding versions for other syllables: ᐰ ᑍ ᑬ ᒊ ᒤ ᓁ ᓔ ᓮ ᔧ ᕅ ᕔ ᕾ ᖎ)? When I looked it up, I found out that it's pronounced "aai", but on here it's written as "i", which should I use?

I also noticed that ᐅᐃᑭᐱᑎᐊ is written "oikipitia" here, but isn't ᐅ a "u"? Can it also be written "uikipitia"? Similarly, can "ᑕᒪᑐᒪᓂ/tamatomani" be written "tamatumani"?

Does the combination ᕐᒃ (r, k) ever occur, or does it always represent ᖅ (q)? Also, I've seen the roman version of something like "ᖅᑲ" written as "qka" and "qqa", is there a difference?

There are a few more where the roman version I expected doesn't match the roman version we have in our pages:

• for ᐂᒌᒧᒦᓇ ᐱᖅ/igimunun piiq I expected "ᐂgiimumiina piq"

Some have various spellings depending on dialect some words only exist in one dialect and borrowed when nessisary for another dialect especially best to used neighboring dialect since inuktitut is a continiuum languages. Some may be mispelled. You may check the Inuktitut Living Dictionary which may be a great tool for assistance. ᐂ is definatly an inuktitut letter i think ᐦ comes accross very rarely but i may be mistakened and ive never seen H, that is funny. You ask a lot of questions i simply dont have the time to answer them all. I will try to answer some soon. Translating for Wikipedia

Hello Qrc2006!

I am currently busy with a project to have the interface of MediaWiki (the software used by Wikipedia) in as many languages as possible. On this wikipedia, there are some translations, but those translations are only available on the local Wikipedia, not on all MediaWiki wikis and all Wikimedia wikis. For example, if you log in to the English Wikipedia and change your interface language to Inuktitut, you can't see the translations made here. I see you are a native speaker of Inuktitut and you have already done some translations here. Therefore, I want to invite you to translate the interface further, but for all wikis. To do this, there is a special wiki, called Betawiki. If you want to do this, you can follow the instructions there.

Another advantage is that you can translate the namespaces (User, Help, ...) and the special page (Recentchanges, Allpages, ...) on Betawiki.

The language codes are 'ike-latn' for the Latin variant and 'ike-cans' for the other script.

The Silesian language (Silesian: ślůnsko godka, ślůnski, sometimes also pů našymu) is a language spoken by people in the Upper Silesia region in Poland, but also in Czech Republic and Germany. In 2002 about 56 000 declared Silesian as their native language, but the number of speakers is estimated on 1 250 000.

Silesian is closely related to Polish language, that’s why it is considered as a dialect of Polish by some linguistics.

Alphabet

There’s not one Silesian alphabet. The Silesian speakers are used to write their language with the Polish characters. In 2006 was invented the new Silesian alphabet, based on all of the Silesian scripts (there’s 10 of them). It is widely used on the Internet, as well as in the Silesian Wikipedia.

Ai! Norbert uvunga. Takugit! Aa, I saw this last translation request and the message which was sent you by Thogo. Unfortunately I also wanted to request a translation. I didn't find any other Inuktitut wiki-editor, who could translate it, but if you know one, tell me. I would like to translate the page of my village. And the reason, why I would like tot translate it, is because of I would like to learn Inuktitut, and if I could read about my village in Inuktitut, it could be nice :) My village is anyway called Ecser (pronounciation is 'Echer'), it has article in a lot of languages, but you could use the English version of it.
