ᐅᐃᑭᐱᑎᐊ:ᐅᐃᑭᐅᖃᓕᒫᒐᕐᔪᐊᖅ

From ᐅᐃᑭᐱᑎᐊ

I suspect I'm the only person actually working here, but I'm hoping someday an actual fluent Inuktitut speaker will show up. So, I'm setting this page up to debate the naming of the Inuktitut Wikipedia. ᐅᐃᑭᐅᖃᓕᒫᒐᕐᔪᐊᖅ (Uikiuqalimaagarjuaq) is what's on the front page. Alternatives include:

  • ᐅᐃᑭᐱᑎᔭ (Uikipitija) - a transcription
  • ᐅᐃᑭᓄᒃᑎᑐᑦ (Uikinuktitut) - a bit more frivolous

Alternatively, "wiki" could be read as ᕖᑭ - "viiki".

  • ᕖᑭᐅᖃᓕᒫᒐᕐᔪᐊᖅ
  • ᕖᑭᐱᑎᔭ

Other constructions are no doubt possible. ᐅᖃᓕᒫᒐᕐᔪᐊᖅ is the only attested Inuktitut word for encyclopedia I've found so far.

Also - for The Free Encyclopedia:

  • ᐊᑭᖃᖏᑦᑐᒥᒃ ᐅᖃᓕᒫᒐᕐᔪᐊᖅ (akiqangittumik uqalimaagarjuaq) - free as in free beer, Lit: cost-freeness-bearing encyclopedia
  • ᐃᓱᒪᐃᓐᓇᖅ ᐅᖃᓕᒫᒐᕐᔪᐊᒻᒥᒃ (isumainnaq uqalimaagarjuammik) - free as in speech, Lit: encyclopedia-possessing liberty

ᐅᐃᑭᐱᑎᐊ[edit source]

I like ᐅᐃᑭᐱᑎᐊ a lot - it starts with an ᐅ and ends with an ᐊ so that looks kind of cool. It is shorter than what you guys are using now, and while Inuks have no problem with long words, long names can be irritating. "uikipitia" might look like gibbrish to ᐊᓈᓇᑦᓯᐊᖅ, but I think it's a better name.

About the translation of "The free encyclopedia", I think it should be the second one because that is how the French one translates (encyclopedie libre).

It seems phonetically possible. A search for words ending in "ia" in the Nunavut Hansard finds plenty of instances both for native and borrowed words.
This means constructing an image with:
ᐅᐃᑭᐱᑎᐊ
ᐃᓱᒪᐃᓐᓇᖅ ᐅᖃᓕᒫᒐᕐᔪᐊᒻᒥᒃ
I'll try to get a mock-up up today. I haven't the software to do it professionally at the office.

This image is not transparent, and I have made no effort to use dealiasing or other necessary but sophisticated image ennhancements. It is for looking at only. It needs to be redone on a real graphics platform. ᑏᑎᕉ 10:47, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
